17/11/22 - Animation Using Photoshop

In today's lesson, we created a new animated piece of work, of a person walking forward. We did this, by firstly opening a new Photoshop Document that was 16x7cm, and 300ppi. We then made sure that we had Timeline, Swatches, Brushes, and Layers open on our workspace once again. We then created a new timeline, changing the fps to 25, and zooming it out, copied in an image of a walking template, from the instructions we were following, and then pasted this image onto our Photoshop documents, transforming it, keeping the same proportions, to fill up the full size of our canvas. We then converted this image layer into a smart object.

We then created a new layer, and on this layer used the paintbrush tool, to draw a head and face onto the first diagram on our guide, we named this layer 'Head'. We then created another new layer, and drew a body for our figure, following the same method as with the head, and named this layer 'Body'. We then repeated this process, for each of the limbs of our figure, until we had drawn out all of the layers that we needed for one frame. We then selected each limb in turn and edited them with the Puppet Warp tool, adding in roughly three joints to each limb to adjust the shapes of them. We also had to centre this character, so that they were in the middle of the screen for the animation.

After this, we went to the timeline, and made each of our layers three frames long, and copied the top layer, dragging it next to the original. Doing this, caused the two to form a Video Group, which I named Head Group. We then did this for each layer, so that we could edit everything. We then moved our background guide image across, to know how to edit our character, and moved the playback back pin to the new copied layers, and moved each body part to fit the new guide image. We then repeated this process all the way along the guide image.

To finish off the animation, we had to create a background. To do this, we first created a new layer and named it Sky, we filled this in with blue, and added some clouds, birds, and a sun. We then had to add the land, for which I drew in some grass and flowers. To make this animation even better, we cropped the land canvas to be loner, and added in some more flowers and details, I then converted this land layer into a smart object, and then returned the cropped canvas to its original size, as the new land that is not currently visible is still there, due to being a smart layer. I then went back to the timeline, and, making sure that the playback pin was back at the beginning, added in a Keyframe at the beginning, by pressing on the diamond next to the Transform option on the land layer. I then went to the very end of the layer, and created yet another Keyframe, but with this one, I dragged the land along to show the other end, so that when the animation was played, it looked like the ground was moving, which in turn made it look like the character was moving along the ground, even though they never actually moved.

We then exported this animation into an mp4 file, and a GIF file, to be able to send to other people easily and have the animation loop.
