21/10/22 - Photoshop Work

In today's lesson, we firstly had to work a bit more on the images that we began to create in yesterday's lesson. To improve on mine, I added in an ear as another facial feature, and then from that base image, went on to create three almost identical images, all with one part of the face missing. I then added in different captions to all of these images, depicting the "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" sequence. I then imported these images into Illustrator, so that I could create a set of three artboards together, so that all of the images lined up and could be seen together.

We then go to start on a new project, in which we had multiple images that we had to eventually edit to form one picture. We did this, by first editing the image we had of a girl break-dancing. With this image, we cropped mostly around the girl, and then used the Quick Selection Tool to more precisely cut her out. We then took this selection and created a Layer Mask to separate her from the background. I then selected this Mask and used the Refine Hair option, as well as the Refine Brush, and Brush tools, to remove the background from her hair as much as I could, as well as any other parts on her that I hadn't quite been able to remove yet. I then saved this image, and moved onto the image of the dance floor.

For this image, I had to use the Pen tool and outline the dance floor, using the Convert Pen tool, to curve the corners. After this, I added some feathering to the edges, and saved this newly edited image as well.

I was then able to move onto the Cave image, which would be the background for my final picture. With this image, I had to remove the man in the centre first of all, by using the Clone Stamp tool, and then I had to import the other images that I had edited into this image, as different layers. I then altered the sizes and placements of these layers to fit in with the size of the cave image.

I then had to edit my final base image, which was of some flying bats. For this image, I had to firstly crop out a tree that was sitting in the bottom corner of the image, and then edit the remaining image to be in Black and White. I then had to increase the brightness of the Blues and Cyan's in the image, so that the sky was brighter, in comparison to everything else, as well as increasing the contrast levels, so that the bats were more defined. Using the Magic Wand tool, I then selected the Sky, and then Inversed this selection, so that only the bats were selected, and created a Mask from this selection.

I then added this bat Mask to the rest of my picture, and changed the size of the layer to fit in better. I then duplicated this layer so that there were more bats, and added a Motion Blur to both of these layers, as well as changing the colour levels to blend them in.

To finish off this piece, I had to add in a shadow effect under the break-dancing girl, to make it look more realistic. I did this, by copying the layer that contained the girl, and turned this new layer into a Smart Object. I then added a Black Colour Overlay, and a Gaussian Blur to this layer, to make it look like the colouring and clarity of a shadow. I then distorted this layer, to look more realistic, and lowered its opacity, to make it more see-through, as natural shadows are. I also had to add in an extra small shadow underneath her hand. I did this, by creating an Eclipse shape, making it black and have a Gaussian Blur effect on it. I then lowered its opacity, to fit in with the other shadow, and placed it in the correct place.

After this, we briefly looked at the work of Peter Kennard, and create an image inspired by his art "Haywain with Cruise Missiles". The image is of a calm landscape, with a lake, trees, and cottage in it, however there is also a wagon containing a stack of Cruise Missiles, which obviously does not fit in with the theme of the image at all. With this in mind, we had to create our own images, with a nice background, which has been transformed by a very contrasting item within the image. For my background image, I used "Indian Summer", an oil painting by Serghei Ghetiu, as I thought that the colours were really nice, and the scenery just really drew me in. I then also used an image of some soldiers marching in a formation, as my contrasting theme. I used this as I felt that it would fit in quite well with the shape of the pathway that the trees form in the background.
